Chapter 1 - The Tactical Shift

|

The silence in the hallway was heavier than the darkness. Marin Hollis crouched beside Adelaide Ferrante’s bed, her ears tuned to the subtle shift of air in the doorway. Three sets of boots passed the heavy mahogany threshold.

"Stay down," Marin whispered, her fingers grazing Adelaide's wrist.

"They're not here for money, child," Adelaide murmured back, her voice barely a breath. "They're here to finish what the doctors started."

"Not on my shift," Marin replied cold-bloodedly.

She stood in the pitch-black room, taking two quiet steps toward the adjacent wall. In her right hand, she palmed a heavy steel surgical clamp. In her left, she held an unopened bottle of concentrated antiseptic, its cap already unscrewed.

The first intruder breached the doorway. He moved with practiced military precision, a suppressed pistol held low near his chest, wearing night-vision goggles that glowed with a faint, ghostly green reflection.

He didn't check behind the door frame. It was a fatal oversight for a professional.

The moment his lead shoulder cleared the frame, Marin moved. She didn't hesitate or scream. She thrust the open bottle of concentrated chemical antiseptic directly into his goggle-covered face, splashing the harsh, stinging liquid straight beneath the rubber seal and into his eyes.

The man hissed in pain, staggering back as his vision burned white. Before he could raise his weapon, Marin drove the point of the heavy surgical clamp straight into the nerve cluster beneath his collarbone.

The weapon slipped from his numb fingers.

"Hostile down!" the second intruder barked, swinging his rifle barrel toward the shadow near the door.

Marin didn't try to overpower him. She grabbed the falling body of the first man, using his heavy Kevlar-vested torso as a human shield as two muffled gunshots tore through the dark.

"Clear the nurse!" the third man shouted from the hallway. "Find the target!"

May you like

"She's not a nurse!" the second man yelled, stepping backward as Marin swept his lead leg with a brutal, low kick that slammed his knee against the door frame.

"I am a nurse," Marin whispered into the dark, smashing the heavy brass base of a desk lamp into his temple. "And my patient is sleeping."
