Marin looked down at the contract, then back up into Elias's dark, hopeful eyes.
"And if I say no?" she asked softly, testing him one last time. "If I want to take my bag, board a plane to Europe, and live in a small village where nobody knows my name?"
Elias didn't get angry. He didn't pull rank or offer more money.
Instead, he pulled a small black velvet box from his pocket and set it down next to the contract. He opened it to reveal a simple, exquisite silver ring engraved with the old Ferrante family crest—a wolf beneath three stars.
"If you walk out that door," Elias said softly, "there is a private jet waiting at the airfield to take you anywhere in the world. No trackers. No guards. Total freedom."
He gently slid the velvet box toward her.
"And if you choose to stay... the car is outside to take us to dinner."
Marin stared at the velvet box, her breath hitching in her throat. For six years, she had run from her past, building thick walls around her heart, avoiding attachments, living like a ghost in cheap studio apartments.
