Chapter 20 - The Open Door

The night of the summit, the estate was eerily quiet. Damian had taken ninety percent of the guards with him, leaving Clara and the twins in the fortified panic room beneath the mansion.
Clara sat on the edge of the cot, watching the security monitors. The camera feeds showed empty hallways, dark courtyards, and the heavy iron gates.
Hours passed. The silence was agonizing.
Suddenly, the encrypted phone on the desk buzzed. Clara snatched it up. "Damian?"
"Clara," a voice purred on the other end. It wasn't Damian.
Clara’s blood froze. It was Victoria.
"Did you really think my father would face Damian in a fair fight?" Victoria laughed softly. "The summit was a distraction, darling. Damian is currently surrounded in a warehouse in Queens. And my men just bypassed your gate codes."
On the security monitor, Clara watched in horror as three black vans rolled silently into the estate's courtyard. Men in tactical gear began pouring out, swarming the front doors.
"I'm coming for my children, Clara," Victoria whispered through the phone. "And when I find you, I'm going to finish what the fire started."
The line went dead.
Clara looked at the two sleeping infants in their cribs. She looked at the heavy steel door of the panic room. She grabbed Damian’s spare gun from the desk, cocking it with a shaking hand.
