Chapter 19 - The Syndicate's Threat

|

Clara’s recovery was slow, but Damian never left her side. The mansion was heavily fortified, effectively cutting them off from the outside world. But in the mafia, isolation was a sign of weakness.

A month after the shooting, a black envelope was delivered to the estate. Damian opened it in his study, his face turning to stone.

"What is it?" Clara asked, rocking Oliver in her arms.

"The Commission," Damian said quietly. "They’ve called a summit. Victoria’s father has rallied the other families. They are demanding I step down as Don."

"Because of me," Clara realized, her stomach dropping. "Because you chose a maid over their bloodline."

"Because they are greedy old men looking for an excuse to take my territory," Damian corrected, tossing the letter into the fireplace. "They think the assassination attempt made me weak. They think I'm distracted by you."

Luca stepped into the room, his face grim. "Boss, if we don't attend the summit, they'll declare open war. We're outnumbered three to one. Victoria's father has hired mercenaries."

Damian stared at the burning letter. He walked over to Clara, kissing the top of Oliver's head, then pressing a kiss to Clara's forehead.

"Gear the men up," Damian said softly, though his eyes were lethal. "If they want a war, I’ll drown them in it."
