Chapter 11 - The Debt of Blood

|

Briggs spat blood onto the linoleum, laughing bitterly. "She didn't want them, Boss. She said they'd slow her down. She ordered me to hunt the maid down and kill them all before you found out."

Damian didn't yell. He didn't explode. The deadly calm that washed over his features was infinitely more terrifying. He handed his shotgun to Luca.

"Put him in the trunk," Damian ordered smoothly. "We will have a very long conversation later."

He turned back to Clara. Without another word, he shrugged off his heavy trench coat and wrapped it securely around her and the twins. The warmth of his coat, smelling of expensive cologne and gunpowder, enveloped her.

"My car is warm. We have a private doctor waiting at the compound," Damian said, his voice surprisingly gentle as he placed a hand on the small of her back, guiding her out of the ruined pharmacy.

Clara was too exhausted to fight. She let herself be led to the armored SUV. Once inside, the heat blasted, and she finally allowed herself to stop shivering.

Damian sat beside her in the back seat, watching her with an intensity that made her skin prickle. "You risked your life for my blood," he said quietly.

"They were innocent," Clara whispered, staring out the window. "I couldn't leave them."

"In my world, loyalty is bought with blood," Damian stated, leaning closer. "You gave me back my soul, Clara. Which means, from this moment on, you belong to me. I will protect you. But you will never leave my sight again."

Clara looked at him, realizing she had traded one nightmare for a gilded cage.
