Chapter 16 - The Ambush

The peace didn't last. Two months after the fire, Damian took Clara and the boys to a private pediatric clinic in the city. Despite the heavy security detail, the convoy was exposed.
As they drove through a narrow tunnel, an explosion rocked the lead SUV, flipping it onto its roof. Tires screeched as Damian's driver slammed on the brakes.
"Ambush!" Luca yelled from the front seat, drawing his weapon.
Gunfire erupted, echoing deafeningly in the enclosed space. Masked men poured out of vans blocking the exit.
"Get down!" Damian roared, pushing Clara and the baby carriers to the floorboard of the armored car, covering them with his massive body.
Bullets hailed against the bulletproof glass, spiderwebbing the windows. Damian drew his weapon, kicking the heavy door open and returning fire. He moved with terrifying precision, dropping two attackers instantly.
"Stay in the car, Clara!" Damian shouted over the chaos.
Clara held the boys tight, her heart pounding. She looked through the cracked window and saw a sniper positioned on the tunnel catwalk, aiming directly at Damian’s exposed back.

She didn't think. She threw the heavy car door open, launching herself forward just as the sniper fired.
