Chapter 20 - The Shadow Beyond the Door

|

At 9:00 p.m. that evening, I sat in my Denver hotel room, waiting to fly back to Seattle the moment closing arguments concluded the following day.

The rain was pouring hard against the glass, blurring the city lights below. I called my apartment in Seattle to check on Lila.

"She's sleeping like an angel, Evan," the lead protection officer, Agent Davis, reported over the line. "The apartment is fully secured. We have two men in the hallway and one in the alley."

"Thank you, Davis," I said, letting out a long breath. "I'll be home tomorrow afternoon."

I hung up, pouring myself a glass of water from the nightstand.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed with an urgent priority alert from Detective Marcus Reed.

I picked it up instantly. "Marcus?"

"Evan!" Marcus's voice was frantic, drowned out by the sound of wailing sirens in the background. "Get down! Lock your door right now!"

"What happened?!"

"Grant's GPS ankle monitor just went dark three minutes ago!" Marcus screamed over the radio chatter. "The private security guards at his Colorado residence were found unconscious! A chopper picked him up from the estate grounds five minutes ago!"

The blood drained from my face. "Where is he going?!"

"We don't know! Federal agents are scrambling air defense, but—"

BEEP.

A second incoming call flashed on my screen from my Seattle apartment's landline.

My heart stopped beating. I switched lines with trembling fingers. "Davis?! Is that you?!"

Silence.

No sound came through the speaker except the rhythmic, heavy sound of breathing, followed by the faint, distinctive friction of soft socks dragging across a wooden floor.

Then, a low, familiar voice whispered into the receiver from eight hundred miles away—or perhaps from right outside the room:

"Open the door, Evan."

The line went dead.

Outside my hotel door, three soft, deliberate knocks echoed into the dark room.

Clack. Clack. Clack.
