Chapter 18 - Unraveling Bonds

|

Two months later, as the trial date approached, a bizarre procedural anomaly occurred in the Denver Federal District Court.

A obscure offshore private equity firm based in Dubai quietly posted an astronomical ten-million-dollar emergency bond on Grant's behalf, taking advantage of a loop-hole in a international treaty clause related to classified defense contractors.

Despite furious objections from the prosecution, a federal magistrate ruled that Grant could be released to a high-security private residence in rural Colorado under 24/7 armed guard and a military-grade GPS ankle monitor while his lawyers argued a jurisdictional appeal.

The news broke on a rainy Thursday night.

I stood in my kitchen, staring at the television screen as the news anchor detailed Grant's unexpected release from the federal facility.

"How?" I whispered to the empty room. "Who is paying for this?"

My phone rang instantly. It was Marcus.

"Evan, don't panic," Marcus said, his voice tense. "He's under heavy surveillance. The ankle monitor pings his location every three seconds directly to the U.S. Marshals' command center."

"Marcus, a Dubai holding company just dropped ten million dollars to get him out!" I shouted, pacing the floor. "He built intelligence networks for foreign governments! He knows how to disappear!"

"There are four armed marshals stationed outside his property line," Marcus insisted. "He can't move ten feet without triggering an alarm. You and Lila are safe in Seattle."

I hung up, an unbearable sense of paranoia washing back over me. I walked down the dark hallway to Lila's bedroom, opened the door quietly, and watched her sleeping peacefully beneath her bright blue blankets.

I sat down in the armchair beside her bed, pulling my licensed sidearm from my drawer, keeping it rested on my knee as the rain beat against the windowpane.
