Chapter 17 - Fall of an Empire

In early March, the federal grand jury in Denver returned a thirty-two-count indictment against Grant Whitaker and five top executives at Whitaker Strategic Risk.
The charges included felony child abuse, witness tampering, corporate fraud, tax evasion, and illegal wiretapping. Celeste, having entered a full plea agreement with federal prosecutors, agreed to testify as a key witness in exchange for a suspended sentence and mandatory rehabilitation therapy.
I sat in my Seattle office reviewing the legal documents sent over by Detective Marcus Reed.
"His empire is completely gone, Evan," Marcus said over the speakerphone. "The federal government seized his houses, his private jets, and his bank accounts under RICO statutes. He doesn't have enough money left to pay his defense team."
"What about his security network?" I asked. "The men he hired to intimidate us?"
"Disbanded or under federal investigation," Marcus replied. "Without Grant's money flowing through those offshore accounts, nobody is willing to risk a federal felony for him anymore."
I looked out the window at the Puget Sound. The heavy grey winter clouds were finally breaking, letting pale spring sunlight flood across the city streets.
"Thank you, Marcus," I said softly. "For listening to me that night."
"You saved that little girl's life, Evan," Marcus said firmly. "I just opened the door. Now go raise your niece."

I hung up the phone, feeling a profound weight lift from my chest for the first time in four months. The monster had been defeated, his money drained, his power dismantled.
It felt like the ending of a story. But in my profession, I should have known that monsters rarely die quietly.
