Chapter 10 - The Journalist's Lens

|

"How is that possible?!" I demanded, stepping into the hallway so Lila wouldn't hear me from her room. "He’s facing felony child abuse and obstruction charges!"

"His legal team argued that his security firm holds critical defense contracts that require his active oversight," Marcus explained bitterly. "A sympathetic federal magistrate signed off on his release under high-grade electronic monitoring. He's confined to his Denver estate, but Evan... he has full access to his money, his tech, and his network now."

A cold dread settled in my stomach. Grant wasn't the kind of man who sat quietly under house arrest. He was a master of asymmetrical warfare.

"If he thinks he can intimidate us into dropping the charges, he's mistaken," I said.

"He doesn't have to intimidate you if he can destroy your credibility," Marcus warned. "Watch your back, Evan. He knows where you live."

That night, after Lila went to sleep, I pulled out my secure laptop and opened a new investigation folder labeled WHITAKER STRATEGIC RISK.

For fifteen years, I had investigated financial crime and corporate misdeeds. I had never turned those tools on my own brother. But Grant had opened this door, and I was going to make sure he couldn't close it.

I spent six hours digging through public registry filings, offshore shell corporate trees in Panama and the Cayman Islands, and defense procurement ledgers. What I found went far beyond a successful security firm.

Whitaker Strategic Risk was funneling millions of dollars through untraceable subsidiaries to pay off state officials, local judges, and private intelligence subcontractors.

Grant hadn't just built a successful business—he had built a private protection racket disguised as a corporate security empire. And his favorite tool for keeping people silent was leverage.

I stared at the green code flashing on my screen, realization dawning on me.

Grant hadn't just abused Lila because he was a sadist. He was maintaining total, ruthless control over every living thing in his environment because he couldn't afford a single crack in his wall.
