Chapter 8 - The Certified Letter

|

Thursday morning, the regular mail carrier walked up the concrete steps to my parents’ apartment building.

My father, Arthur, was sitting in his worn-out recliner, watching a daytime history documentary. The doorbell rang with a sharp, piercing buzz.

He shuffled to the door, opening it to find the mail carrier holding an electronic signature pad.

“Certified mail for Arthur and Helen Evans,” the carrier said, holding out a thick, legal-sized envelope. “I just need a signature.”

Arthur frowned, adjusting his reading glasses. He scribbled his name on the digital pad and took the heavy envelope. The return address was printed in sharp, bold letters: Thorne Legal Associates, LLC.

“Helen!” Arthur called out, walking back into the living room and tearing the top of the envelope open. “We got something from a law firm.”

My mother walked out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dish towel. “A law firm? Is it another scam? Throw it in the trash.”

“Hold on,” Arthur murmured, unfolding the thick parchment paper.

His eyes scanned the bold legal heading.

THIRTY-DAY NOTICE TO VACATE PREMISES.

Arthur’s face drained of all color. He read the first paragraph, his hands beginning to shake so violently the paper rattled.

“What does it say?” my mother demanded, snatching the document from his hands.

She read the words aloud, her voice dripping with disbelief. “This serves as official legal notice that your tenancy at the property is terminated. You have thirty days to completely vacate the premises and surrender all keys to the legal proprietor, Laura Evans. Failure to comply will result in a forced eviction by county law enforcement.”

My mother stopped reading. She stared at the signature at the bottom. It was officially notarized, stamped, and terrifyingly real.

“She’s evicting us?” Arthur whispered, collapsing back into his recliner.
