Chapter 18 - Reclaiming the Keys

|

At exactly 9:00 AM on the thirtieth day, I pulled up to the apartment building.

I wasn't alone. Marcus Thorne walked beside me, carrying a leather briefcase, followed closely by a uniformed county sheriff.

We climbed the concrete stairs to the third floor. The door to the apartment was wide open.

My parents were standing in the hallway, surrounded by hastily packed suitcases and trash bags full of clothes. They looked exhausted, aged, and utterly broken. Karla was standing with them, helping carry a heavy box, her eyes red and swollen from crying.

The sheriff stepped forward. “Mr. and Mrs. Evans. The thirty-day notice has expired. Are the premises vacated?”

“Yes, officer,” Arthur whispered, handing a single set of silver keys to the sheriff.

The sheriff handed the keys directly to me.

My mother looked at me, her eyes filled with a bitter, venomous hatred that couldn't quite mask her deep humiliation.

“I hope you’re happy, Laura,” my mother spat. “You destroyed your own family.”

“I didn't destroy anything,” I replied smoothly, gripping the keys tight in my hand. “I just stopped letting you destroy me. Enjoy Karla’s living room.”

Karla opened her mouth to yell, but the sheriff rested his hand on his duty belt. “It’s time to move along, folks. The property belongs to Ms. Evans now.”

They didn't say another word.

Arthur picked up two heavy suitcases and began the slow, agonizing walk down the concrete stairs. Karla followed, struggling under the weight of a cardboard box. My mother was the last to turn away, casting one final, desperate look at the apartment before disappearing down the stairwell.

I stood in the doorway, listening to their footsteps fade away until there was nothing but absolute silence.
