Chapter 11 - The Truth About the Money

|

“You can’t do this!” Karla yelled, completely losing her composure.

Several patrons in the café turned their heads, watching the spectacle. The barista paused wiping down the espresso machine, looking ready to intervene.

“I absolutely can,” I said, standing up and slipping into my trench coat. “Because I own the apartment. Legally, ethically, and financially.”

“They raised you!” Karla screamed, stepping in my path. “You owe them!”

I pulled a folded piece of paper from my coat pocket and slapped it onto the table between us. It was an itemized spreadsheet I had printed that morning.

“Read it, Karla,” I commanded, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

Karla looked down. The spreadsheet detailed every single expense I had covered for the family over the last five years.

“Forty thousand to clear Dad’s IRS liens so the bank wouldn't seize the property. Ten thousand in property taxes since the deed transfer. Four thousand in Dad’s heart medications. And exactly forty thousand, eight hundred dollars for your condo.”

I stepped closer, until I was mere inches from her face.

“I have spent nearly a hundred thousand dollars keeping this toxic family afloat, and my reward was being called a parasite while my daughter cried over spilled food. I owe you nothing. You owe me everything.”

Karla stared at the staggering numbers on the page, the color completely draining from her face. The illusion of her superiority shattered into a million jagged pieces right there in the middle of the coffee shop.

“Chase is going to leave me,” she whispered, tears finally welling in her eyes.

“Then I suggest you start looking for a cheaper apartment,” I replied coldly.

I picked up my laptop bag, walked past her trembling frame, and pushed through the café doors into the crisp afternoon air.
