Chapter 10 - The Coffee Shop Ambush

|

By Friday afternoon, Karla had officially lost her mind.

She used a shared location tracker on my old iPad to trace me to a small café near my new neighborhood. I was sitting at a corner table, editing a manuscript on my laptop, when the bell above the café door violently jingled.

Karla marched straight toward my table, her expensive heels clicking aggressively against the wooden floor.

“You psychotic bitch,” Karla hissed, slamming her hands down on my table, rattling my coffee cup.

I didn't flinch. I slowly saved my document, closed the laptop, and looked up at her.

“Hello, Karla,” I said calmly. “Lower your voice. People are staring.”

“I don't care who’s staring!” she spat. “Turn the automated transfer back on right now. You are going to ruin my credit score. Chase is already asking questions. Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is for me?”

“I imagine it’s quite embarrassing to pretend you’re a successful adult while secretly relying on your single, divorced sister to pay your bills,” I replied, my voice perfectly level.

Karla’s face contorted with rage. “You owe me that money! I helped you move in when your husband left you!”

“You carried one box of books, Karla. I paid you eight hundred and fifty dollars a month for four years. That’s forty thousand, eight hundred dollars. Consider your moving services officially compensated.”

“Mom and Dad are freaking out,” Karla tried a new angle, leaning in close. “They got some fake eviction letter. You are tearing this family apart over a bowl of soup.”

“It wasn't just soup, Karla. It was four years of disrespect. And the letter isn't fake.”

I took a sip of my coffee, maintaining absolute eye contact.

“Tell Mom to start packing her china. She has twenty-six days left.”
