Chapter 19 - The Cleansed Home

|

I walked into the apartment.

It was entirely empty. The faded floral sofas, the heavy oak dining table, the suffocating clutter of my mother’s toxic energy—it was all gone. Sunlight poured through the large bay windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the quiet air.

Marcus stepped inside, looking around approvingly.

“The locksmith will be here in twenty minutes to change all the deadbolts,” Marcus said, checking his watch. “The title is completely clear, Laura. You can sell it, rent it out, or move back in. It’s entirely yours.”

“Thank you, Marcus. For everything.”

“You did the hard part,” he smiled gently, patting my shoulder before stepping back out into the hallway to make a phone call.

I walked slowly through the rooms. I walked into the kitchen, stopping in front of the stainless steel sink where my daughter’s soup had been so callously thrown away. I turned on the faucet, letting the warm water run, washing away the invisible stains of the past.

I walked into the master bedroom. It was massive, with beautiful hardwood floors and a view of the park across the street. This would be my room now. The smaller bedroom down the hall would be painted a bright, cheerful yellow for Sophia.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't an exhausted guest walking on eggshells in someone else's domain. I wasn't the doormat. I wasn't the parasite.

I was the master of my own house.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Mrs. Gable at the boarding house.

“Mrs. Gable?” I smiled, a genuine laugh bubbling up in my chest. “Could you please tell Sophia to pack up her toys? We’re coming home.”
