Chapter 13 - The Guilt Trip

|

By the second week, the aggression turned into desperate, suffocating manipulation.

My voicemail inbox became a graveyard of my mother’s weeping messages. I sat on the edge of the bed in Mrs. Gable’s boarding house, listening to the voicemails while Sophia colored happily on the floor.

“Laura, please pick up. It’s Mom. I’m so sorry about the soup. I was just having a bad day. You know how my nerves get.”

“Laura, your father isn't sleeping. His heart can't take this stress. Do you really want to put your elderly parents on the street over a silly argument? We are blood!”

Delete.

“How can you be so cruel? We are family! We gave you life! Call me back right now!”

Delete.

They never once offered to pay rent. They never acknowledged the hundred thousand dollars I had spent. They just wanted the consequences of their actions to magically disappear so they could go back to treating me like a doormat.

Mrs. Gable knocked gently on my door, holding a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies.

“For the little one,” the elderly landlady smiled, handing me the plate. She looked at my phone, noticing the heavy sigh I let out. “Family trouble, dear?”

“Something like that,” I managed a tight smile.

“My late husband used to say that toxic people only cry when they realize they can't use you anymore,” Mrs. Gable said wisely, patting my arm. “Don't let the tears fool you into opening a locked door.”

I looked at Sophia, who immediately reached for a cookie with a bright, innocent giggle. Mrs. Gable was right. I wasn't just protecting my assets; I was protecting my daughter from growing up in a house where her existence was treated as a burden.

The door was locked. And I was throwing away the key.
