Chapter 7 - The $2 Million Policy

|

Four days after I arrived at the Duca estate, the insurance company received the formal claim.

Marco showed me the internal fax copy obtained by his contact inside Apex Mutual Financial.

The document bore Charlotte Whitmore’s elegant, sweeping signature. She had filed for expedited disbursement under the 'Unusual Circumstances / Suspected Homicide' clause, attaching a copy of the Chicago Police Department’s missing persons report.

"Look at the date," Marco pointed out, his long finger resting on the bottom line.

I leaned in. The policy had been executed six months ago.

"She added an automatic double-indemnity rider three weeks before she had me taken," I noted, my mind working through the details with terrifying clarity. "If I died during a felony kidnapping, the payout jumped from one million to two and a half million."

"She was thorough," Marco admitted. "She even paid the first three premiums out of her personal account so the policy wouldn't be flagged during a corporate audit."

"She’s confident," I said, leaning back in my chair. "She thinks I'm already in the river. She thinks you took her money and cleaned up the evidence."

Marco smiled—a slow, dangerous flash of white teeth that didn't reach his dark eyes.

"Confidence is the most dangerous thing a liar can have," Marco said. "She thinks she controls the narrative because no one has ever challenged her. Tomorrow night is the Annual Whitmore Hope Gala at the Drake Hotel."

My chest tightened. "The gala? She’s still holding it?"

"Of course she is," Marco said. "It's her biggest night of the year. She’s turned it into a memorial vigil for you. Tickets are sold out at five thousand dollars a head. Everyone who matters in Chicago will be in that ballroom."

He reached out, his thumb gently brushing against the healing bruise on my jaw line.

"And you are going to be her guest of honor."
