Chapter 19 - The Fall of Charlotte Whitmore

|

They dragged Charlotte Whitmore off the stage while news cameras flashed continuously, capturing every second of her hysterical, screaming descent from grace.

"Jane!" she shrieked as they pulled her through the side doors. "Jane, you're nothing without me! You'll always be nothing!"

I stood on the balcony, watching her go until the double doors swung shut behind her, cutting off her voice forever.

The ballroom below was a sea of upturned faces. People were looking at me not as a victim, not as a sick girl, but as the woman who had just brought down one of the most powerful empires in Illinois history.

Marco stepped closer to my side. He didn't say anything. He simply offered his hand.

I looked down at his long fingers, then up at his dark, unreadable eyes.

"Is it over?" I asked softly.

"Her story is over," Marco replied, sliding his fingers through mine, his grip solid and warm. "Yours is just beginning."

We turned away from the balcony railing, leaving the chaos, the flashing cameras, and the ruined gala behind us.

We walked down the long carpeted hallway toward the private elevator, surrounded by Marco’s silent, watchful men.

For twenty-six years, I had lived in a world where my life was measured in medical reports, insurance policies, and my mother’s insatiable greed. I had been sold, beaten, and left for dead.

But as the heavy steel doors of the elevator closed us in, I realized something incredible.

I wasn't bleeding anymore.
