Chapter 14 - The Invitation

|

Charlotte didn't notice at first. She was too wrapped up in her own voice, her eyes fixed on the teleprompter at the back of the room.

"...and so, as we look toward the future of the Whitmore Foundation—"

She stopped.

The noise in the ballroom had shifted. People weren't looking at the stage anymore. Heads were turning toward the back of the hall, pointing up toward the high VIP balcony.

Charlotte frowned slightly, a tiny flicker of annoyance crossing her perfect face. She cleared her throat, holding her hands out. "Please, my friends, I know this is an emotional evening—"

"Charlotte," a man near the front table whispered loudly, standing up and pointing toward the ceiling. "Look."

Charlotte raised her eyes.

Her gaze traveled up the velvet-lined walls, past the glittering crystal chandeliers, until it landed squarely on the balcony.

She saw Marco Duca standing tall in his charcoal tuxedo.

And then she saw me.

The color drained from Charlotte’s face so fast it looked as if she had been struck by an invisible blade. Her lips parted, the glass award slipping from her manicured fingers and shattering against the wooden floor of the stage with a loud, explosive crash.

The microphone caught the sound, echoing through the speakers like a gunshot.

No one moved. No one spoke. Five hundred people sat in absolute, breathless silence, looking back and forth between the weeping mother on stage and the 'dead' daughter standing calmly beside Chicago’s most feared crime boss.

I didn't smile. I didn't wave.

I simply stood there, resting my gloved hands on the balcony railing, and looked down at her.
