Charlotte froze.
The entire room seemed to hold its breath as my single sentence hung in the air.

Charlotte immediately covered her mouth with her hands, realizing what she had done. But it was far too late. The mask hadn't just slipped; it had shattered into a thousand irrecoverable pieces.
At the side entrance of the stage, four plainclothes officers from the Illinois State Police stepped into the spotlight. Behind them walked the Cook County Assistant District Attorney, carrying an arrest warrant.

Charlotte backed away, her white dress catching on the shattered glass of her glass award. "No! Get away from me! Do you know who I am?! I built this foundation! I own this city!"
