Chapter 16 - Walking into the Lion's Den

She had said too much.

Just as Marco had predicted, her panic had stripped away her polish. In front of five hundred witnesses, she hadn't asked if I was hurt. She hadn't asked where I had been. Her very first instinct was to call me crazy and demand I be locked away.

A quiet murmur of confusion rose from the tables.

"Why isn't she hugging her?" a woman in the front row asked her husband. "She hasn't even walked toward the stairs."

"And why is she shouting at her like that?" another donor added.

Charlotte realized her mistake instantly. She tried to soften her expression, reaching for the microphone again. "I... I'm sorry, everyone. I am just so overwhelmed with emotion... Jane, sweetie, please..."

Behind her, the giant twenty-foot projection screen flickered once.

The black-and-white photograph of my childhood vanished.

In its place, a high-definition document appeared on the screen—a scanned copy of the two-and-a-half-million-dollar double-indemnity life insurance policy executed by Charlotte Whitmore.

The crowd went silent again.

A second document flashed onto the screen beside it: the wire transfer records showing eight hundred thousand dollars moving from the Whitmore Children's Foundation directly into an offshore account in Panama.

Charlotte turned around slowly, looking up at the gigantic screen behind her.

"What... what is that?" she stammered, her voice echoing through the open microphone. "Turn that off! Who is touching the media system?!"
