Chapter 6 - Shadow Accounting

|

"It gets worse," Marco said, pulling a smaller black drive from his pocket and dropping it onto the desk beside the file.

I looked up at him. "What is that?"

"Enzo spent the last twenty-four hours going through the offshore accounts tied to the Whitmore Children’s Foundation," Marco explained, resting one hand on the back of my chair. "Your mother wasn't just using you for publicity. She’s been running an international money laundering operation through her charity for six years."

I blinked, trying to connect the image of my polished, church-going mother to the dark reality Marco was describing. "Laundering money? For who?"

"For politicians, real estate developers, and corporate executives who wanted to buy tax exemptions," Marco said. "They donated millions to her foundation, she took a fifteen percent cut, and transferred the rest to shell accounts in Panama."

"And when the state auditor started asking questions three months ago..." I began, my voice dropping.

"She panicked," Marco finished. "She needed a sudden, tragic loss to explain missing funds and distract the press. A dead daughter, a public trial, and a two-million-dollar insurance payout would cover every hole in her ledger."

I stared at the black drive on the desk.

"She has everyone fooled," I said, feeling an old, familiar despair creep back into my throat. "The Mayor calls her every week. The police chief attends her annual galas. If I walk into a station right now and tell them what she did, she’ll tell them I'm crazy. And they’ll believe her."

Marco leaned down, his face close to mine, his scent of sandalwood and rain wrapping around me like armor.

"You're not going to the police," Marco said firmly.

"Then what do I do?"

"You stay quiet," he said. "And you let her dig her own grave."
