Chapter 9 - The Federal Nightmare

|

The reality of the situation crashed down upon the room like a collapsing building.

"Marcus Thompson," the second FBI agent continued, not missing a beat. "You are under investigation for bank fraud, utilizing stolen military credentials, and grand larceny. Tessa Thompson, you are facing charges for charity fraud, embezzlement, and forgery."

Tessa let out a horrific, high-pitched wail and slumped completely onto the couch, curling into a fetal position. "I don't want to go to jail! Mommy, do something! Call a lawyer!"

Marcus fell to his knees on the hardwood floor, grabbing at his own hair. "Danny, please! We're your blood! You can't let them do this to us! I'll pay it all back, I swear to God I'll pay it back!"

Daniel looked down at his brother with an expression of pure, unadulterated apathy.

"You stole from veterans, Marcus," Daniel said quietly. "You stole from men and women I served with. Men who died. There is no paying that back."

The military CID investigators began formally reading them their Miranda rights, the repetitive, rhythmic legal jargon providing a surreal soundtrack to the absolute destruction of the Thompson family. I stood beside my husband, my hand tightly laced with his, feeling a profound sense of justice settling over my bruised body.

But the night wasn't over. Not by a long shot.

Detective Harris, who had been quietly organizing his paperwork at the dining room table, cleared his throat loudly. The commanding sound forced everyone, even the weeping Tessa, to look up at him.

Harris reached into his leather briefcase and pulled out a second, significantly thinner manila folder. It was sealed with red evidence tape.

"Before we proceed with the physical transports," Detective Harris said, his voice dropping into a solemn, grave register, "there is one more extremely pressing matter we need to address."

Daniel frowned, looking genuinely confused. He turned to me, but I shook my head slightly. I had absolutely no idea what the detective was talking about. We had handed over all our evidence days ago.

"What is it, Detective?" Daniel asked, his protective grip on my hand tightening.

Detective Harris looked at Gloria, his expression shifting from professional detachment to something resembling deep, personal disgust.

"Mrs. Thompson," Harris said quietly. "While auditing the labyrinth of shell accounts you used to launder Daniel's deployment funds, our cyber division stumbled across a completely separate, highly concealed trust fund."

Gloria stopped crying. Her eyes widened in sheer, absolute terror.
