Chapter 14 - Handcuffs and Tears

|

The FBI agent grabbed Gloria's wrists, ignoring her frantic, hysterical sobbing, and forcefully clicked the heavy steel handcuffs closed.

"Gloria Thompson, you are under arrest," the agent recited firmly, hauling the struggling woman to her feet.

As Gloria was marched toward the front door, crying out for someone, anyone, to help her, Marcus finally snapped out of his shock. He lunged forward, not to save his mother, but to save himself.

"Wait! I didn't know about the secret trust fund!" Marcus shouted, holding his hands up toward the military investigators. "I didn't know about the adoption! I just signed the loan papers she gave me! I'll testify against her! I'll tell you everything she did!"

The CID investigator simply scoffed, grabbing Marcus by the shoulder and spinning him around to cuff him.

"Save it for the federal judge, kid," the investigator muttered. "You still committed wire fraud on a military installation. You're going away for a long time."

Tessa didn't fight. She didn't scream. When the second FBI agent approached her, she simply held out her trembling, perfectly manicured hands, her face completely blank with shock. The reality of losing her designer clothes, her luxury car, and her entire social standing had finally short-circuited her brain.

Within five minutes, the loud, chaotic living room was methodically cleared of the criminals who had poisoned my life.

I stood in the center of the foyer, watching the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers illuminate the dark street through the open front door. I watched as Gloria, the woman who had birthed me, despised me, and ultimately tried to ruin me, was shoved roughly into the back of a federal vehicle.

The heavy doors slammed shut, cutting off her pathetic wailing.

The vehicles slowly pulled away from the curb, their sirens silenced out of respect for the quiet neighborhood, leaving behind only the distant rumble of tires on asphalt.

Detective Harris lingered by the front door, holding his heavy briefcase. He looked at me with deep, profound sympathy.

"We'll need you and Daniel to come down to the federal building tomorrow to give formal statements regarding the new evidence," Harris said softly. "But for tonight... lock your doors. Take a breath. You survived."

May you like

"Thank you, Detective," Daniel said quietly, reaching out to shake the man's hand.

Harris nodded, stepped out onto the porch, and closed the front door behind him, leaving Daniel and me entirely alone in the sudden, echoing silence of our home.
