Chapter 18 - Daniel's Vow

|
That evening, I sat on the couch in our living room, waiting for Daniel to return from his debriefing at the military base.
When he walked through the front door, he looked exhausted, but the heavy, dark shadow that had haunted his eyes since the night of the arrests had finally begun to lift. He took off his uniform jacket, tossing it over a chair, and sat down heavily next to me.
"The military officially cleared me of any involvement in Marcus's fraudulent loans," Daniel sighed, rubbing his face. "They verified that my ID was stolen. My career is safe."
"I knew they would," I smiled, leaning my head against his broad shoulder.
I reached into the folder sitting on the coffee table and pulled out the legal documents Maya had prepared. I handed them to Daniel without saying a word.
He frowned, taking the papers and scanning the first page. As his eyes hit the final financial figures, his breath hitched. He looked up at me, completely stunned.
"Claire... is this real?" he whispered, his hands shaking slightly.
"It's very real," I said softly. "The trust fund is legally mine."
Daniel stared at the staggering number, then slowly placed the papers back on the table. He didn't look happy. He looked incredibly sad.
"I don't want it, Claire," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "That money is dirty. It's the money she took to throw you away. It's the money she used to build the fake, toxic life she raised me in. I don't want a single cent of it."
I reached up and gently cupped his face, forcing him to look at me.
"It isn't dirty money anymore, Daniel," I told him fiercely. "It's ours. We are going to wash it clean. We are going to use it to pay off the mortgage on this house. We are going to use it to set up scholarships for adopted children. We are going to use it to build the family that neither of us ever truly had."
Daniel looked into my eyes, the tears he had been holding back finally falling.
He leaned forward, pressing his forehead against mine, his large hands gently framing my face.

"I vow to you, Claire," Daniel whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute, unshakable conviction. "I vow that I will spend the rest of my life protecting you. I will never let anyone make you feel small or unwanted ever again. You are my only family now."
"And you are mine," I replied, kissing him deeply, sealing the promise in the quiet safety of the home we had fought so hard to protect.
