Chapter 19 - The Trial Approaches

|
Nine months later, the cold Chicago winter had thawed into a bright, promising spring.
The federal prosecution against the Thompson family moved forward with ruthless, terrifying efficiency. Faced with the overwhelming, undeniable mountain of digital evidence, forensic accounting records, and my sworn testimony, the criminal defense strategies quickly began to collapse.
There truly is no honor among thieves.
Tessa was the very first to break. Terrified of facing hard time in a federal penitentiary, she hired a separate lawyer and aggressively sought a plea deal. She officially turned state's evidence, agreeing to testify fully against her mother and brother regarding the charity fraud and the forged vendor documents in exchange for a significantly reduced sentence in a minimum-security facility.
Marcus panicked when he realized his sister had thrown him under the bus.
Desperate to save his own skin, Marcus attempted to cut a deal by offering to expose Gloria's deeper money-laundering contacts in the city. He turned on the mother who had fiercely protected and enabled his arrogance his entire life, handing the FBI the names of the corrupt bank managers who had facilitated the fraudulent loans.
Gloria, abandoned by the children she had prioritized, was left entirely isolated to face the overwhelming wrath of the federal government alone.
I sat in Maya's office on a Tuesday morning, reviewing the final witness preparation documents for the upcoming trial.
"Gloria's legal team is grasping at straws, Claire," Maya said, handing me a fresh cup of coffee. "They are trying to suppress the audio recordings from your home security cameras, claiming they were obtained illegally. But the judge has already signaled he will deny the motion."
"Good," I nodded, taking a sip of the hot coffee. "I want that audio played in open court. I want a jury to hear exactly how she spoke to me."
"You are going to be their star witness," Maya warned gently. "The defense will try to rattle you on the stand. They will try to paint you as a vindictive, estranged daughter out for revenge."
I smiled, a calm, deeply rooted confidence settling over my posture.

"Let them try, Maya," I said softly. "I survived twenty-eight years as an unwanted ghost, and I survived her slapping me in my own hallway. A defense attorney in a cheap suit isn't going to rattle me."
Maya grinned, her eyes sparkling with professional pride. "You are incredibly terrifying, Claire. In the best possible way."
