Chapter 5 - The Cavalry Arrives

Marcus’s arrogant grin didn't just fade; it violently collapsed. All the blood rushed from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, pale gray. His hand remained glued to the doorknob as if he had been struck by lightning.
Standing on the porch, illuminated by the harsh glare of the porch light, was Daniel.
He was still wearing his Army combat uniform, the fabric dusty and worn from travel, his boots scuffed. He looked massive, imposing, and entirely lethal.
But it wasn't just Daniel's unexpected presence that had paralyzed my brother-in-law. It was the fact that Daniel was absolutely not alone.
Flanking him on his left were two stern-faced military investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), wearing sharp, dark suits with their credentials clipped visibly to their belts.
Behind them stood two federal agents from the FBI, their postures rigid and their hands resting casually but purposefully near their waistbands.
And standing just over Daniel's right shoulder was a man I knew very well from my professional life: Detective Harris from the Chicago Financial Crimes Division.
The crisp night air rushed into the warm house, but it brought no relief. The atmosphere instantly turned to suffocating ice.
Daniel stepped over the threshold slowly, his heavy boots thudding against the hardwood floor. He didn't look at Marcus. He didn't acknowledge Tessa, who had let out a small, strangled gasp from the hallway.
His dark, stormy eyes bypassed his entire family and locked directly onto me.
He saw the fresh, bright red blood smeared across my bottom lip.
His gaze drifted upward, settling on the angry, dark purple bruise that was already swelling rapidly on my cheekbone.
The exhaustion of his deployment vanished from his face, replaced by a cold, calculating, and terrifying fury.
His eyes then moved slowly, methodically, to my mother-in-law, Gloria, whose pearls suddenly looked like a noose around her neck. He looked at Marcus, who was visibly trembling by the door. He looked at Tessa, who was desperately trying to shrink into the wallpaper.

The remaining shreds of familial warmth completely vanished from Daniel's face. The room went deathly, oppressively silent.
No one was laughing anymore.
