Chapter 12 - Buried Secrets

The document slipped from my trembling fingers and fluttered to the hardwood floor.
"No," I whispered, shaking my head vehemently. "No, this is a mistake. My parents adopted me from a closed agency. The records were sealed. They told me my biological mother was a teenager who couldn't care for me."
"It wasn't a standard agency adoption, Claire," Detective Harris said gently, his voice full of compassion. "Gloria was in her early twenties. She had gotten involved with a very wealthy, married man. When she got pregnant, he paid her a massive sum of hush money to disappear, give up the child quietly, and never contact him again."
I stared at Gloria, who was now weeping openly, her face buried in her hands.
"She took the money," Harris continued, outlining the horrifying reality of my existence. "She brokered a private, back-channel adoption with the Hastings family. But instead of walking away, she took the hush money and placed it into a heavily shielded trust fund under your biological name. She didn't keep the money for you, Claire. She used that trust as a foundational shell account to launder her own dirty money for the next twenty-eight years, knowing no one would ever look for a ghost."
The absolute depravity of the scheme hit me like a physical blow.
She had sold me. She had sold her own daughter for seed money, abandoned me to strangers, and then spent the next three decades illegally using my identity to build her fraudulent empire.
And then, in a twist of cruel, cosmic irony, I had unknowingly married her adopted son.
"You knew," I gasped, stepping toward Gloria, my voice rising in hysteria. "When Daniel brought me home for the first time... when he introduced me to you... you knew exactly who I was."
Gloria finally looked up at me. Her mascara was running in dark, ugly rivers down her cheeks. The haughty, aristocratic matriarch was completely gone, replaced by a terrified, cornered animal.

"I didn't know at first!" Gloria sobbed, her voice shrill and desperate. "It was a coincidence! A horrible coincidence! I didn't recognize you. But then Daniel told me your birthday. He told me the names of your adoptive parents. And I realized..."
"You realized that your dirty little secret had just walked through your front door," Daniel snarled, stepping protectively in front of me, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were white.
