Chapter 8 - The Birth in the Storm

Grace’s scream echoed off the stone walls as she bore down with everything she had left.
I pressed my forehead against hers, whispering words of love and encouragement, feeling every tear she shed as if it were carved into my own skin.
Minutes bled into each other. The thunder outside sounded like distant cannon fire, but the only sound that mattered was the steady, rhythmic effort of my wife fighting to bring our child into the world.
“One more push, Grace!” Bellini instructed, his hands moving with precise, practiced grace. “I see his head! One more!”
Grace let out a long, shuddering cry, her fingers digging deep into my forearm, and pushed with her final reserve of strength.
Then... a profound silence fell over the room.
For two agonizing seconds, no one breathed.
And then, a sharp, angry, beautiful cry shattered the quiet.
Bellini let out a long breath, a bright smile breaking across his weathered face as he held up a tiny, squirming baby covered in a clean white towel.
“It’s a boy,” Bellini announced, his voice thick with emotion. “A healthy, perfect Rossi heir.”
Tears blurred my vision as Bellini placed the small, warm bundle directly onto Grace’s chest.
Grace immediately wrapped her arms around the baby, her exhaustion vanishing as she looked down at his tiny, red face. He had a mop of dark hair and small, delicate fingers that immediately reached out and clamped around my thumb.
“Look at him, Adrian,” Grace sobbed softly, kissing the baby’s forehead. “He’s safe. We made it.”

I leaned down and kissed her lips, then pressed my forehead against our son’s tiny head, letting my tears fall freely for the first time in my life.
“Welcome to the world, Leo,” I whispered.
