Chapter 2 - The Midnight Hunt

|

The tires of my black SUV screamed against the wet asphalt as we tore through the winding mountain roads leading toward the river gates. Rain lashed against the windshield in violent sheets, the wipers barely able to clear the dark path ahead.

Marco drove with lethal precision, his knuckles white on the leather steering wheel. Beside me, Bellini checked the chamber of his own weapon, his hands steady despite his age.

“She’s nine months pregnant, Adrian,” Bellini said softly above the roar of the engine. “She cannot endure heavy physical trauma. If Sophia forces her onto a boat in this storm...”

“She won't,” I growled, staring out into the pitch-black woods lining the highway. “Because I’m going to kill Sophia before that boat leaves the shore.”

Ahead of us, tail lights flickered through the heavy mist. A gray sedan was speeding toward the lower perimeter gates, its hazard lights blinking erratically.

“That’s the vehicle!” Marco called out, slamming his foot onto the gas pedal.

Our SUV lurched forward, closing the distance within seconds. The gray sedan swerved wildly, attempting to cut across the narrow wooden bridge spanning the swollen river.

“Ram them!” I commanded.

Marco didn't hesitate. He slammed our heavy bull-bar directly into the sedan’s rear fender. Metal shrieked against metal. The sedan spun out of control, tires smoking, before crashing violently into the heavy stone guardrail at the end of the bridge.

I threw my door open before our vehicle even came to a complete stop, drawing my pistol and rushing toward the wrecked sedan.

I kicked the driver’s side door open and pulled the driver out by his collar. It was one of our low-level estate guards, his nose bleeding profusely.

“Where is she?” I screamed, jamming the barrel of my gun under his chin.

“She... she isn't in the car!” the guard stammered, terrified. “It was a decoy! They put me in the car to draw you away from the chapel!”
