The room was painted a soft cream color, decorated with hand-painted murals of lavender fields and soaring birds. No steel bars. No heavy locks. No dark corners.
Leo was sleeping peacefully in his white crib, his chest rising and falling in a quiet, healthy rhythm, clutching a small wooden bear in his tiny hand.
I reached into the crib and adjusted his blanket, my hand brushing against the wooden rail.

“Do you ever think about the estate?” Grace whispered softly.

She took my hand, intertwining her fingers with mine, her wedding ring pressing against mine in a perfect, unbroken bond.
