Chapter 8 - The Carefully Curated Lie

Adrien’s Perspective.
The smoke in the grand hallway burned my lungs as I kicked open the door to the master suite. The room was annihilated.
"Mara!" I screamed, my voice cracking with absolute terror. "Mara!"
"Boss, you shouldn't be in here, the ceiling is giving way," Victor said, grabbing my shoulder.
I shoved him off violently. "Where is she? You said she was safe! You said Pike secured her in the vault!"
"I don't know what happened," Victor lied smoothly, his face a mask of grim concern. "Pike's dead. Found him in the stairwell."
I frantically dug through the rubble, my hands bleeding as I moved burning pieces of furniture.
Then, one of Victor's men walked out of the ruined closet. He was holding something small and glittering.
"Mr. Thorne... we found this in the sub-basement. Along with a lot of blood."
He handed me Mara's wedding ring.
My knees hit the floor. The air was violently sucked from my lungs.
"There's more, Adrien," Simone's soft, mournful voice came from the doorway. She walked in, her dress torn, carrying a scorched laptop retrieved from Mara's private safe. "We cracked her drive to see if she left a backup location. Look at this."
She turned the screen toward me. It displayed a massive offshore bank transfer, initiated hours before the attack, wiring millions into an untraceable Cayman account.
"She paid the mercenaries, Adrien," Victor said softly. "She set us up. She used the chaos to run."
I stared at the screen, then down at the bloody ring in my hand.
"No," I whispered, the denial tasting like ash in my mouth. "She was pregnant. She wouldn't."

"She wanted out," Simone whispered, resting a hand on my shoulder. "I'm so sorry, Adrien."
They handed me a perfectly curated lie. And in my grief, I swallowed it whole.
