Chapter 3 - The Dead Feed

The nursery was my sanctuary. I had spent months choosing the pale gray paint, the handcrafted crib, and the soft ambient lighting. I sank into the rocking chair, pulling up the estate’s internal security feed on my tablet. I wanted to see if the camera glitch was a network issue or something else.
I scrubbed through the timeline from earlier in the afternoon.
At 4:15 PM, the feed showed the nursery door swinging open.
My breath caught in my throat. Simone Vey walked into the room, her signature red stilettos sinking into the plush rug. She didn't look like a woman admiring a baby's room; she looked like a general surveying a battlefield.
Seconds later, Victor Hale appeared behind her.
I cranked the volume on my tablet all the way up, pressing the speaker to my ear. The audio was heavily muffled, thick with static, but the sheer silence of the house allowed their whispers to bleed through.
"East team moves at 10:50," Victor murmured, checking his heavy gold watch.
"Pike first," Simone replied, her eyes fixed on the empty crib.
"Is Adrien secured?"
"He'll be in the south wing with me when it happens," Simone said, her voice dripping with a terrifying calm. Then, she leaned closer to Victor, her next words turning my blood completely to ice. "You said she would be taken out before the attack. We can't have a surviving heir complicating the transition."
"She won't make it out of this hallway," Victor promised.
On the screen, Simone reached out and casually adjusted a stuffed bear on the dresser, as if she hadn't just ordered the murder of a pregnant woman and an unborn child. Then, the video feed abruptly snapped to black.

The tablet slipped from my trembling hands, clattering onto the hardwood floor.
They weren't planning a defense. They were orchestrating a coup. And I was the primary target.
