Chapter 10 - The Phantom Threat

I watched the footage on a loop. Every time Simone whispered, "We can't have a surviving heir," a fresh wave of white-hot rage washed over me.
I had spent three years living in fear, hiding in the shadows while the people who tried to slaughter my child lived like royalty in a mansion built on my blood.
I paused the video on Victor's smirking face.
It’s time, I thought.
I opened a heavily encrypted, burner email client routed through seven different VPNs. I didn't attach the whole video. That would be too easy to dismiss as a deepfake.
Instead, I used an audio editor to snip out exactly ten seconds of the file.

"Mommy?" Leo's soft voice came from the other side of the locked door. "Are you coming out?"
I looked at the door, thinking of the life we could have had if they hadn't stolen it from us. I wasn't just hiding anymore. I was going to tear their empire down, brick by bloody brick.
I clicked Send.
The progress bar shot across the screen, finalizing the transmission. The message vanished into the digital ether.

I closed the laptop and took a deep breath, my hands finally steady.
"Coming, baby," I called out, standing up. The war had just begun.
