Chapter 11 - The Echo in the Dark

Adrien’s Perspective.

The mahogany desk in my study was covered in shipping manifests and territorial maps, but my mind was entirely blank. Three years. Three years since Blackthorn House burned, and I still expected Mara to walk through the heavy oak doors, complaining about the cold.

My private monitor chimed. A priority encryption alert.

I frowned, setting down my scotch glass. Only Victor and Simone had access to this channel. I clicked open the blank email and saw a single audio file attached.

I pressed play.

The static hissed through the expensive speakers, followed by a voice I recognized instantly.

“East team moves at 10:50.”

My blood ran completely cold. It was Victor.

“Pike first.”

Then came the second voice. Smooth. Calculating. Familiar. Simone.

“You said she would be taken out before the attack.”

The recording cut off, plunging the study back into dead silence.

I stopped breathing. The glass of scotch slipped from my numb fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor.

I played it again. And again. And again.

Every time the words echoed in the room, a new piece of the meticulously constructed lie they had fed me crumbled to dust. They knew about the attack. They orchestrated it. They arranged the hit on Mara and my unborn child.

My vision swam, a blinding red haze settling over my eyes. I stood up so fast I knocked my heavy leather chair backward.

For three years, I had mourned a woman I believed had betrayed me. I had leaned on the two people who were holding the bloody knives.

I pulled my customized pistol from the desk drawer, jacking a round into the chamber with a sharp, metallic crack.

Someone was going to die tonight. But first, I needed to know who sent this ghost from the grave.
