Chapter 17 - Face to Face

|

Adrien slowly looked up from the floor, his eyes red and brimming with tears.

"They told me you were secure in the vault," he pleaded, his voice raspy. "Victor said you were heavily guarded. I thought you were safe. If I had known... Mara, I swear to God, if I had known, I would have burned the entire house down to get to you."

"But you didn't know," I countered sharply. "Because you trusted them more than you trusted your own instincts. You let Simone run your empire, and she almost used it to murder your child."

At the word child, Adrien froze completely.

He slowly pushed himself off the floor, his eyes darting toward the locked door of the back office.

"Did he...?" Adrien's voice was a fragile whisper, terrified of the answer. "Did he survive?"

Before I could answer, the lock clicked. I had forgotten to secure the deadbolt when Elias arrived.

The door swung open, and little Leo wandered out, rubbing his sleepy eyes, clutching his stuffed bear.

"Mommy, who's crying?" Leo asked.

Adrien stopped breathing. He stared at the miniature version of himself standing in the doorway, the absolute shock registering on his hardened features. A tear slipped down his cheek, tracing a line through the rain on his face.

"Hi," Adrien whispered, taking a slow, trembling step forward.

Leo hid behind my leg, peering up at the massive, crying stranger.

"Mara," Adrien looked at me, completely shattered. "You gave me a son."

"I saved my son," I corrected him, finally lowering the revolver. "You lost your right to him the night you walked away."
