Chapter 2 - Human Shield

|

“Dylan!” I screamed, the sound tearing through my throat like broken glass.

There was no time to process the betrayal. There was no time to rage. The massive iron base of the chandelier snapped, sending hundreds of heavy crystal prisms screaming downward through the air.

I didn’t hesitate. I threw myself across the table, sliding over the shattered glass and china, and slammed my body over Haley just as the darkness crashed over us.

The impact was catastrophic.

Heavy metal rods and thick crystal fragments slammed into my back and shoulders with terrifying force. Pain exploded behind my eyes, hot and sharp, radiating down my spine. A jagged shard sliced clean through the fabric of my dress, carving deep into my shoulder blade. I bit my tongue so hard I tasted copper, suppressing a scream because I couldn't let my body collapse onto the fragile child beneath me.

"Mommy!" Haley sobbed, her tiny hands clutching my blood-stained dress. "Mommy, it hurts!"

Debris continued to rain down around us for three agonizing seconds before silence descended upon the ballroom, broken only by the groans of injured guests and distant alarm sirens.

I coughed through the thick cloud of white plaster dust. Every breath felt like hot knives in my lungs, but I forced myself to raise my arms, creating a tiny pocket of air for my daughter.

"Haley... baby, are you okay?" I gasped, my vision swimming in dark red spots.

Her tiny face was deathly pale. Her lips were turning a faint shade of blue, and her chest was heaving in ragged, frantic gasps. The shock and the thick plaster dust had triggered her severe asthma.

"Can't... breathe..." she wheezed, her small fingers digging into my arm.

"Hold on, sweetheart," I begged, tears cutting clear tracks through the white dust on my cheeks. "Daddy's here. Daddy has your inhaler."

I lifted my head, wincing in agony as glass slid off my bleeding back. A few yards away, Dylan was slowly sitting up, brushing plaster from his hair. Ryan was tucked safely beneath him, crying loudly, but completely uninjured save for a tiny scratch on his knee.

"Dylan..." I called out, my voice raspy and thin. "Her medicine... it's in my purse. Please... she can't breathe..."

Dylan didn't turn around.

He was cupping Ryan’s face in his hands, his voice trembling with a tender, desperate warmth. "It’s okay, Ryan. Uncle Dylan’s here. I won’t let anything happen to you. You’re safe."

Then Sierra rushed through the lingering dust, dropping to her knees beside them. She threw her arms around Dylan’s neck, weeping hysterically.

"You saved him!" Sierra sobbed, pressing her face into Dylan's shoulder. "If something happened to Ryan, I would have died! Oh God, Dylan!"

Dylan wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close, resting his chin on her hair with a protective, intimate gentleness that stripped away every lie our marriage was built on.

"Don't cry, Sierra," he whispered, his voice dripping with devotion. "I'm here. I'll always protect you both."

I lay there in my own blood, holding my suffocating daughter, watching my husband comfort another woman and her child.
