Chapter 16 - Public Execution

|
The Master of Ceremonies stepped up to the podium, tapping the microphone to quiet the murmuring crowd.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the MC announced loudly, "Welcome to the Annual City Hero Awards! Tonight, we honor a man whose heroic actions saved a young boy's life during the tragic Grand Regent chandelier collapse—Mr. Dylan Vance!"
Applause broke out across the room, led by Dylan’s paid PR staff, though many of the Wall Street investors were looking around nervously at the Sterling Global executives standing beside me.
Dylan straightened his jacket, offering the crowd a victorious, dazzling smile. He stepped up to the main stage, taking his place behind the podium while Sierra stood proudly at the side of the stage, wiping away dramatic tears for the cameras.
"Thank you," Dylan said into the microphone, leaning forward with practiced modesty. "Thank you all. When that ceiling gave way, I didn't think about stock portfolios or corporate titles. I saw a child in danger... and my instincts as a father took over."
"Did your instincts as a father take over when you left your own daughter beneath the falling glass, Dylan?"
My voice didn't come from the audience.
It echoed loudly, clearly, and powerfully through the room’s primary audio speakers.
The crowd gasped. Dylan froze, his face twitching in sudden horror.
I was holding a wireless microphone connected directly to the venue's main AV system, handed to me seconds earlier by Julian Thorne.
"Elena! What are you doing?!" Dylan hissed off-mic, glaring at me from the stage. "Security! Turn off her mic!"
The security guards moved forward, but four massive Sterling Global bodyguards instantly blocked their path, holding up official court injunction orders.
"Don't interrupt, Dylan," I said calmly, stepping into the center aisle beneath the bright spotlights. "The public deserves to see the full video of your 'heroism.'"
I clicked a button on a small remote control in my hand.
The massive high-definition LED screens behind the podium—meant to show Dylan’s corporate promo video—flickered and changed.
The raw, unedited security footage from the Grand Regent Hotel filled the giant screens in crystal-clear 4K resolution.
The entire ballroom watched in horrified silence as the video played:
Dylan sprinting past five-year-old Haley... throwing himself over Ryan... while I lunged across broken glass to take the crushing impact of the chandelier... and then the video showed Dylan stepping into the ambulance with Sierra, leaving his bleeding wife and wheezing daughter on the curb while saying the words: "You're an adult, Elena. You can handle yourself."
Gasps of pure horror and disgust erupted throughout the room. Guests stood up from their chairs, pointing at the screen.
"Oh my God..." a high-society woman whispered in horror. "He abandoned his own child!"
"Look at him! He didn't even check if his daughter was alive!" an investor shouted.

Dylan’s face turned from pale to ghostly white. Sweat broke out across his forehead as he stared at the screen in utter humiliation. "Turn it off! That's out of context! Turn it off!"
"We're not done yet, Dylan," I said softly.
