Chapter 11 - A Snake in the Grass

|

On Wednesday afternoon, two days before the grand dinner, an unexpected visitor arrived at my front door.

I opened the door to find Sierra standing on my porch. She was wearing a beige cashmere coat, oversized designer sunglasses, and carrying a box of gourmet pastries. Her blonde hair was styled impeccably, and she wore an expression of soft, patronizing sympathy.

"Elena," Sierra said sweetly, stepping forward without being invited. "I hope I'm not intruding. I wanted to drop by and see how you and little Haley are doing."

I stood in the doorway, my arm resting in its sling, looking down at her like she was a stain on the porch tile.

"What are you doing here, Sierra?" I asked flatly.

Sierra walked past me into the foyer, looking around the grand entrance hall with an unmistakable air of possessiveness.

"I just felt so terrible about the tension between you and Dylan," she sighed, setting the pastry box on the marble foyer table. "Dylan has been staying at my apartment quite a bit lately... he's just so exhausted from all the media attention, you know?"

She turned to face me, taking off her sunglasses to reveal eyes filled with triumphant malice.

"I know you're hurt, Elena," Sierra continued, her voice dropping into a low, mocking whisper. "It must be devastating for a woman to watch her husband sprint past her own child to save another woman's son. But you really shouldn't hold it against him. Dylan has always loved Ryan like his own flesh and blood."

I closed the front door, leaning back against it, keeping my hands folded calmly over my chest.

"Is that why you came here, Sierra?" I asked smoothly. "To mark your territory?"

Sierra chuckled softly, taking two steps toward me. "I came here to give you a reality check, Elena. Dylan married you because he was lonely after I left for California. You were a convenient, safe choice. A domestic maid who could keep his house clean while he built his company."

She reached out, touching the gold picture frame on the hallway table showing Dylan and me on our wedding day.

"But now that I'm back," Sierra purred, her eyes glinting with venom, "the real family is reuniting. Dylan is going to ask you for a divorce after the dinner on Friday. He's giving me the house, Elena. So if I were you, I'd start packing your little bags today."

I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice.

Instead, I reached into my cardigan pocket, pulled out my smartphone, and tapped the screen to stop the high-definition audio recording app that had been running since she stepped onto the porch.

"Thank you, Sierra," I said softly, my voice filled with genuine appreciation. "That was incredibly informative."

Sierra’s smug smile faltered slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"You just confessed on tape to living with my husband while he is legally married, confirmed his intention to dissipate marital assets, and admitted to emotional harassment," I explained, holding up the phone. "My divorce attorney is going to play this audio in open court."

Sierra’s face turned bright red. "You crazy bitch! Give me that phone!"

She lunged forward to grab it, but the front door suddenly opened behind me.

Two uniformed police officers, whom I had called ten minutes earlier when my security cameras detected her car pulling into the driveway, stepped into the foyer.

"Is there a problem here, Mrs. Vance?" the lead officer asked.

I looked at Sierra, whose hands were frozen in mid-air, her face pale with shock.

"Officer," I said calmly. "This woman is trespassing on my property and harassing me in front of my home. Please escort her off the premises immediately."
