Chapter 1 - The Cracking Ceiling

|

The grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel was bathed in the warm, ambient glow of five massive crystal chandeliers. Hundreds of high-society guests mingled in tailored tuxedos and shimmering floor-length gowns, their laughter mixing with the sweet cadence of a live string quartet.

My husband, Dylan, stood near the center stage, sipping scotch with the city’s top investors. I sat at a round table nearby, watching our five-year-old daughter, Haley, color in her drawing book. A few feet away sat Sierra, Dylan’s ex-fiancée, along with her six-year-old son, Ryan. Sierra had returned to the city six months ago after her divorce, and somehow, she had worked her way back into Dylan’s social circle.

I took a deep breath, trying to ignore the subtle glances Dylan kept throwing toward Sierra's table.

"Look, Mommy! I drew a butterfly!" Haley beamed, holding up her little sketchbook.

"It’s beautiful, sweetie," I murmured, brushing a strand of fine dark hair behind her ear.

Suddenly, a sound like a sharp gunshot echoed through the hall.

The chamber orchestra stopped playing instantly. Conversations froze mid-sentence. The heavy golden beams above us groaned under an unnatural weight. High above the children’s table, the largest crystal chandelier—weighing nearly two tons—shivered violently.

Dust began to rain down upon the silk tablecloths.

Then came the terrifying roar of tearing steel.

"The ceiling is collapsing!" someone shrieked from the back.

Panic erupted like wildfire. Guests shoved past one another, screaming, overturning tables and spilling expensive champagne across the marble floor.

My heart stopped beating. I turned my head frantically. Haley was frozen in her chair, her wide eyes staring upward at the shadow of death rushing down from above.

"Haley!" I screamed.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Dylan move. He was closer to the children than I was. He was an athletic man, fast on his feet. For one glorious, desperate fraction of a second, relief washed over my chest.

He’s going to save our daughter.

But Dylan didn’t even look at Haley.

His eyes locked entirely onto Ryan. With a frantic, wild desperation I had never seen him display in five years of marriage, Dylan lunged across the floor, grabbed Sierra's son, and threw his entire body over the boy, shielding Ryan completely beneath his torso.

He didn't glance back once. He left our five-year-old daughter standing completely alone directly beneath the falling mountain of glass.
