Chapter 34 - The Remediation

|
The physical scars of Adrian’s greed took much longer to heal than the financial ones.
The subterranean space beneath the Monarch Grand, once the site of the reckless Crownbridge excavation, had been an open wound for nearly two years. Charlotte had poured millions into a massive, highly specialized engineering project to backfill the compromised bedrock and permanently stabilize the hotel’s foundation.
On a rainy Tuesday morning, Thomas Vance, the lead engineer who had chosen to cooperate with Charlotte, stood in her office holding a final, heavy binder.
"The remediation is officially one hundred percent complete, Ms. Bennett," Thomas announced, visibly relieved. "We finished injecting the final high-density concrete supports into Sector 4 last night. The seismic sensors are showing zero structural anomalies. The foundation is stronger now than it was when the building was first constructed."
Charlotte let out a long, shuddering breath she felt she had been holding for two years.
"Thank you, Thomas," Charlotte said, accepting the binder. "You did excellent work. You protected this building."
"You gave me the chance to fix my mistake, ma'am," Thomas replied humbly. "I owe you my career."
After Thomas left, Charlotte put on her coat and walked down to the lobby of the Monarch. The grand chandelier sparkled, the marble floors gleamed, and the soft, elegant music played exactly as it always had. The guests drinking coffee in the lounge had absolutely no idea how incredibly close they had come to a catastrophic collapse.
She walked over to the framed ten-dollar bill near the employee entrance. The corkboard beside it was now covered in hundreds of notes, photos, and thank-you cards from the staff.
Ethan appeared beside her, holding two cups of coffee.
"The engineers officially signed off?" Ethan asked, handing her a cup.
"They did," Charlotte smiled, feeling a profound sense of absolute peace. "The foundation is secure. The danger is completely gone."
"It cost the company a fortune to fix his mess," Ethan noted quietly.
"It cost us a fortune in cash," Charlotte corrected him gently. "But it bought us something invaluable. It bought us our integrity. We can finally close the book on Adrian’s legacy. Everything we build from this day forward belongs entirely to us."

Ethan raised his coffee cup in a quiet toast. "To solid foundations."
"To solid foundations," Charlotte echoed, taking a warm, satisfying sip.
