Chapter 27 - An Unexpected Visitor

With the European restructuring plan successfully underway, a sense of cautious optimism returned to Bennett Global. The stock stabilized, the press moved on to other scandals, and Charlotte finally had time to breathe.
She was sitting in her office on a quiet Friday afternoon when her assistant buzzed in.
"Ms. Bennett, there is a woman here to see you," the assistant said, her voice slightly hesitant. "She doesn't have an appointment, but she says it’s a personal matter. Her name is Victoria."
Charlotte froze. Victoria. Her former mother-in-law. The woman who had treated her with thinly veiled contempt for eleven years.
"Send her in," Charlotte said, her voice betraying none of the sudden tension she felt.
The door opened, and Victoria stepped inside. She looked older, the sharp, aristocratic edge softened by the last year of family scandal and Adrian’s imprisonment. She was dressed elegantly, as always, but without the usual imposing jewelry.
"Charlotte," Victoria said, stopping just inside the door.
"Victoria," Charlotte replied, remaining seated. "This is an unexpected surprise. I thought you had moved permanently to Europe."
"I did," Victoria said, gripping her handbag tightly. "But I needed to return to New York to finalize the sale of Adrian’s townhouse. And... I needed to see you."
"Why?"
Victoria took a slow, deep breath, a rare display of vulnerability for the proud matriarch.
"I came to apologize," Victoria said quietly.
Charlotte didn't react immediately. She studied the woman standing before her, searching for the hidden angle, the manipulation. But she only saw genuine weariness.
"You were always kind to Ryan," Victoria continued, her voice trembling slightly. "Even when he didn't deserve it. Even when I encouraged him not to appreciate it. I blamed you for his lack of ambition. I thought you were dragging him down to your level."

"I know," Charlotte said simply.
"I was wrong," Victoria admitted, the words clearly painful for her to say. "You were the only one holding him accountable. When the truth about Adrian came out... when I saw what my own brother was capable of... I realized how completely blind I had been."
