Chapter 24 - The Boardroom Backlash

|
The emergency board meeting was tense before Charlotte even opened her mouth. The sudden stop-work order on Crownbridge had already leaked to the financial press, and Bennett Global’s stock had taken a noticeable dip at the opening bell.
Charlotte stood at the head of the table, facing the same executives who had applauded her victory over Adrian a year ago.
"I have suspended the Crownbridge excavation," Charlotte announced, projecting the old geological survey onto the screen. "We discovered hidden reports confirming that deep excavation in Sector 4 poses a severe, unacceptable risk to the structural integrity of the Monarch Grand."
The room erupted.
"Charlotte, we have fifty million dollars sunk into phase one alone!" argued Richard, a senior board member. "We can't just abandon it based on a twenty-year-old survey. Bring in new engineers. Find a workaround."
"I consulted with three independent firms last night," Charlotte countered calmly. "They reviewed the raw data. The risk is real. Adrian knew it, and he intended to proceed anyway. I will not."
"The employee pension fund is heavily reliant on the projected revenue from Crownbridge," another board member pointed out. "If you kill this project, you’re breaking a promise to the very people you empowered."
That was the argument that hurt the most. Charlotte knew the optics were terrible. She was the "employee’s champion" who was now tanking their biggest financial asset.
"I am aware of the financial implications," Charlotte said, holding her ground. "But I will not gamble the lives of our employees and guests to inflate a pension fund. We will find other revenue streams. Bennett Global is diverse enough to absorb this loss."
"The shareholders won't see it that way," Richard warned. "You’re looking at a massive vote of no confidence, Charlotte. You survived Adrian, but you might not survive this."
May you like
"If surviving means compromising the safety of this building, then I don't want to survive," Charlotte replied, her voice ringing with absolute certainty. "The stop-work order stands. We begin remediation tomorrow. This meeting is adjourned."
She walked out of the boardroom, leaving a stunned silence behind her. She had won the battle, but she knew the war for the company’s future had just begun.
