Chapter 25 - A Quiet Dinner

|

The fallout was immediate and brutal. Financial news outlets labeled her decision "panicked" and "overly cautious." Several major investors threatened to pull their capital. The pressure was immense, far heavier than the personal betrayal she had suffered from Ryan. This was the weight of leadership.

That evening, Charlotte sat alone in her office, reviewing alternative revenue projections, desperately trying to find a way to plug the massive hole Crownbridge had left in their budget.

There was a soft knock on her door. Ethan poked his head in, holding two brown paper bags that smelled deliciously of Thai takeout.

"I figured the Chairwoman could use a break," Ethan said, stepping inside. "And I know you haven't eaten since breakfast."

Charlotte smiled wearily, clearing a space on her desk. "You’re a lifesaver, Ethan."

They ate in comfortable silence for a few minutes. Ethan didn't ask about the board meeting; he already knew the details. He just offered quiet solidarity.

"You did the right thing, Charlotte," Ethan said finally, setting his chopsticks down. "Even if the market doesn't see it yet."

"I know I did," Charlotte replied, staring at her food. "But knowing you're right doesn't make the consequences any easier to bear. I have to figure out how to make the pension fund whole."

"We will," Ethan assured her. "Bennett Global has an extensive real estate portfolio in Europe that’s been underperforming. If we restructure those assets, we might be able to free up enough capital to cover the Crownbridge shortfall."

Charlotte looked up, her interest piqued. "Adrian ignored the European portfolio because it wasn't glamorous enough."

"Exactly," Ethan nodded. "But there’s solid value there. It just requires a lot of meticulous, unglamorous work to reorganize it."

"Unglamorous work is my specialty," Charlotte said, a spark of determination returning to her eyes. "Draw up a preliminary proposal, Ethan. Let’s see what we can find in the old ledgers."

For the first time all day, Charlotte felt a glimmer of hope. She wasn't just defending her father’s building; she was going to prove that doing the right thing could also be good business.
