Chapter 3 - The Hospital Ward

|

The emergency room was a blinding blur of white lights, sterile smells, and frantic voices. They rushed me into Trauma Room 3, forcing my father and my son to wait in the hallway. Doctors poked, prodded, and ordered X-rays while I stared blankly at the ceiling tiles, my mind completely numb.

The diagnosis was severe: three fractured ribs, a hairline fracture in my collarbone, and deep tissue bruising.

When they finally moved me to a private recovery room, my father walked in holding a cup of terrible hospital coffee. My son was asleep against his broad shoulder, completely exhausted by the adrenaline crash.

My father gently laid the boy down on the small vinyl sofa in the corner, covering him with his heavy canvas jacket. Then, he pulled a chair right up to my bed.

“Evelyn,” he said softly, taking my hand.

I burst into tears. The dam finally broke. Seven years of hiding, of lying to my family, of pretending everything was perfect, all came crashing down in a humiliating, agonizing flood.

“I’m sorry, Dad,” I sobbed, unable to wipe my own face because of the IV lines. “I’m so sorry. I thought I could fix him. I thought it was my fault.”

“Never apologize for his sins,” my father interrupted fiercely. He reached out and gently wiped the tears from my cheeks with his rough thumb. “You survived. That is the only thing that matters. But the hiding ends tonight. You understand me?”

I nodded, the pain in my chest flaring as I breathed.

“The police are outside the door,” my father continued, his tone turning strictly business. “They want a statement. You are going to tell them everything. Every threat, every bruise, every hidden bank account. We are going to bury him under the law, Evelyn.”

Before I could answer, the hospital room door swung open. A detective walked in, holding a notepad. But he didn’t look sympathetic. He looked deeply uncomfortable.

“Mr. Vance. Mrs. Mercer,” the detective said quietly. “We found the silver Ford F-150 abandoned near the interstate. But there’s a problem.”

My father stood up, crossing his arms over his chest. “What problem?”

“Julian’s lawyer just contacted the precinct,” the detective explained, avoiding my eyes. “He filed an emergency ex parte order claiming you kidnapped his son and assaulted him, Mrs. Mercer. He is demanding immediate physical custody of the boy.”
