Chapter 17 - The Witness

|

The entire courtroom froze. My father’s hand instinctively drifted toward his jacket pocket, where I knew his concealed weapon rested. The bailiffs instantly tensed, reaching for their radios.

The heavy wooden doors creaked open.

Julian Mercer walked into the courtroom. He didn't look like a desperate fugitive hiding in tunnels. He wore an immaculate, tailored suit. His hair was perfectly styled. He looked calm, composed, and absolutely terrifying.

He held his hands up in a gesture of peaceful surrender as two court officers immediately approached him, securing him in handcuffs. He didn't resist. He smiled at me across the aisle—a chilling, victorious smile.

"Your Honor," Julian's lawyer said smoothly, ignoring the dramatic arrest of his client. "Mr. Mercer is surrendering to face the baseless criminal charges against him. But regarding this family court matter, we have a witness who will testify that Mrs. Mercer fabricated the abuse allegations to secure full custody and hide her own financial improprieties."

Marcus Thorne scoffed loudly. "Your Honor, this is a circus. We have hospital records and police statements."

"Medical records proving an injury occurred, not who caused it," the lawyer countered smoothly. "The only witness to the alleged assault was a five-year-old child, whom Mrs. Mercer has alienated from his father. We call our primary witness to the stand."

The doors opened one last time.

My heart completely stopped. The blood drained from my face, leaving me dizzy and nauseous.

Walking down the aisle, looking terrified and deeply ashamed, was my younger sister, Clara.

"Clara?" my father gasped, standing up in sheer disbelief. "What the hell is this?"

Clara avoided our eyes, taking the witness stand with trembling hands. She looked at Julian, who offered her a subtle, approving nod.

"Ms. Vance," Julian's lawyer began gently. "Can you tell the court what your sister, Evelyn, told you about her marriage three weeks ago?"

May you like

Clara swallowed hard, tears spilling over her eyelashes. She gripped the edges of the witness stand.

"She... she told me she was going to ruin him," Clara whispered, her voice shaking into the microphone. "She said she was funneling money out of their joint accounts and blaming it on Julian. She said she tripped on the stairs, but she was going to tell the police Julian hit her so she could get sole custody of the baby."
