Chapter 20 - The Open Ending

|

"You are never touching my son again," I stated, my finger tightening over the trigger. "Take one more step, Julian, and I swear to God, I will end this right now."

Julian laughed—a dry, hollow sound that grated against the silence of the house. He didn't believe me. He still saw the terrified, compliant wife he had beaten into submission for seven years. He didn't see the woman who had dismantled his empire, survived his hitmen, and reclaimed her life.

"You don't have the guts to pull that trigger, Evie," Julian whispered, raising the knife and taking a deliberate, arrogant step forward. "You're too soft. You always were."

"Mommy?"

The small, sleepy voice came from the top of the stairs behind me.

My son was standing on the landing, rubbing his eyes, clutching his stuffed dinosaur. He looked down into the dark kitchen, his eyes widening in sheer terror as he recognized the man holding the knife.

"Daddy?" the boy whimpered, shrinking back against the railing.

Julian’s eyes locked onto our son. The predatory obsession flared violently in his gaze. "Come here, buddy. Daddy came to take you home."

Julian lunged forward, ignoring the gun pointed at his chest, his singular focus snapping toward the stairs. He was closing the distance, desperate to grab the boy and use him as a human shield.

The silence of the house was shattered by a deafening, concussive roar.

The flash of the muzzle illuminated the dark kitchen like a strobe light. The smell of gunpowder instantly filled the air.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated shock. The hunting knife slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor. He looked down at his chest, then slowly back up at me, finally realizing that the woman he thought was weak had entirely ceased to exist.

He swayed on his feet, stumbling backward, crashing heavily into the kitchen island before collapsing onto the floor.

I didn't lower the weapon. I kept it aimed perfectly at his motionless body, my breathing heavy, the ringing in my ears drowning out the sound of the rain outside.

I heard the frantic pounding of heavy boots approaching the front door—my father’s security team finally arriving to answer the breached alarm.

I turned my back on Julian's body and walked up the stairs, scooping my trembling son into my arms, holding him fiercely against my chest.

"It's okay, baby," I whispered into his hair, stepping into the safety of the moonlight. "The monsters are gone. We're finally free."
