Chapter 19 - The Night Visit

|

The conviction felt like waking up from a decade-long nightmare. Julian was formally indicted on multiple felony counts, including embezzlement, witness tampering, and aggravated assault. He was locked in a maximum-security cell awaiting a trial he was guaranteed to lose.

Life slowly returned to normal. We moved out of the safehouse and into a beautiful, secure home in the suburbs, surrounded by my father’s extensive security network. My son was thriving in kindergarten, the terrifying memories of his father fading into distant echoes.

I finally felt safe.

Six months passed. It was a cold, rainy November night—almost exactly a year since the night Julian had fractured my ribs.

I put my son to bed, reading him a story about dinosaurs until he fell into a deep, peaceful sleep. I walked downstairs to the kitchen, pouring myself a glass of water, enjoying the absolute, unbroken silence of my new life.

Suddenly, the security system on the wall beeped quietly. A yellow light flashed.

Perimeter breach detected: Sector 4.

My blood turned entirely to ice. Sector 4 was the back patio.

I didn't panic. I remembered my father’s training. I grabbed the heavy, loaded handgun from the biometric safe hidden under the kitchen island, flicked the safety off, and backed into the shadows of the hallway.

The back door handle rattled gently. Then, the distinct, terrifying sound of glass shattering echoed through the quiet house.

Heavy boots crunched on the broken glass, stepping into the kitchen.

"Evelyn," a voice whispered in the dark.

I stopped breathing. The voice was impossible. Julian was in federal lockup. He was serving a twenty-year sentence. He couldn't be here.

But the silhouette stepping into the pale moonlight filtering through the kitchen window belonged to the man who had ruined my life. He was thinner, his hair shaved close, wearing a stolen dark hoodie. He looked like a feral animal.

"I told you," Julian hissed, pulling a long, serrated hunting knife from his pocket, "I would never stop."

I raised the gun, aiming it directly at the center of his chest. My hands were shaking, but my resolve was absolute steel.

"How did you get out?" I demanded, my voice remarkably steady.

"Money buys everything, Evelyn," Julian sneered, taking a slow step forward. "Even an open door during a prison transfer. They think I drowned in the river. I’m a ghost now. And I came back to take my son."
