Chapter 18 - The Verdict

The courtroom erupted into chaotic murmurs. My father looked as if he was going to tear the witness stand apart with his bare hands. I sat completely paralyzed, unable to comprehend the magnitude of the betrayal. My own sister was committing perjury to protect a monster.
"Lies!" my father roared, pointing a furious finger at Clara. "She's being blackmailed! Julian threatened her life weeks ago!"
"Order!" the judge slammed her gavel, her face stormy. "Mr. Vance, one more outburst and I will hold you in contempt."
Marcus Thorne stood up, his demeanor remarkably calm amidst the explosion. He didn't look angry; he looked like a shark smelling blood in the water.
"Ms. Vance," Marcus began, approaching the stand for cross-examination. "That is a very compelling story. But I must ask, why are you testifying today? Did Mr. Mercer offer you something in exchange for your perjury?"
"Objection! Badgering the witness!" Julian's lawyer snapped.
"Overruled," the judge stated coldly. "Answer the question, Ms. Vance."
Clara shook her head, sobbing openly now. "No. No one offered me anything. I'm just telling the truth."
"The truth," Marcus mused, walking back to his table and picking up a thick manila folder. "Are you aware, Ms. Vance, that my investigative team obtained security footage from your apartment building lobby from exactly three days ago?"
Clara froze. Julian’s arrogant smile slightly faltered.
Marcus pulled out a series of glossy photographs and handed them to the judge. "These photos clearly show the respondent, Julian Mercer—a wanted fugitive at the time—entering Ms. Vance’s apartment. The audio recording from the hallway camera captures Mr. Mercer explicitly threatening to kill Ms. Vance if she did not testify today."
The courtroom fell dead silent.
"Is this true, Ms. Vance?" the judge asked, her voice dangerously quiet.
Clara broke completely. She buried her face in her hands, weeping hysterically. "He said he would kill me! He said he would hurt Evelyn! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"
The judge turned a lethal glare toward Julian and his attorney.
"This is witness tampering, perjury, and extortion," the judge stated, her gavel coming down with the finality of a guillotine. "The respondent’s motion is dismissed with extreme prejudice. Full legal and physical custody is permanently awarded to Evelyn Mercer. Bail is denied for the criminal charges. Bailiffs, remove Mr. Mercer from my courtroom."

Julian’s composure finally shattered. As the bailiffs dragged him toward the holding cell doors, he thrashed violently, locking his furious, deranged eyes on me.
"You think this is over, Evelyn?!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking with pure madness. "I will never stop! You are mine!"
