Chapter 16 - The Courtroom

|

Despite Julian being a wanted fugitive, the wheels of justice demanded finality. Two weeks later, the formal custody and divorce hearing was scheduled. It was a procedural formality at this point, but my physical presence was required to finalize the absolute severing of our marriage.

The courthouse downtown was a fortress. My father had hired off-duty police officers to supplement his own security detail, ensuring we moved through the building in an impenetrable bubble of protection.

I sat at the petitioner’s table in the massive, oak-paneled courtroom, flanked by Marcus Thorne and my father. The respondent’s table across the aisle was completely empty. Julian had not been seen or heard from since the menacing voicemail.

The judge, a stern woman with silver hair, looked over the mountain of evidence Marcus had submitted.

"Mrs. Mercer," the judge began, her voice echoing in the quiet courtroom. "Given the extraordinary circumstances, the criminal warrants currently outstanding for the respondent, and the overwhelming evidence of financial fraud and domestic abuse, the court is prepared to issue a default judgment in your favor."

Relief washed over me like a warm wave. It was finally happening.

"However," the judge continued, looking toward the heavy wooden doors of the courtroom. "The court must acknowledge that the respondent’s legal counsel filed a last-minute motion this morning."

Marcus frowned, leaning forward. "Your Honor, Mr. Mercer’s previous counsel withdrew. Who is representing him?"

The courtroom doors swung open.

A man in a sharp, expensive suit walked down the aisle, carrying a sleek briefcase. It wasn't Julian. It was a lawyer I had never seen before.

"Your Honor, I am representing Mr. Mercer," the new lawyer announced smoothly, taking his place at the empty table. "And we object to the default judgment. My client is prepared to present evidence that the financial documents were forged by the petitioner, and that the alleged assault in Grant Park was a coordinated ambush by Mr. Vance’s union enforcers to frame an innocent man."

The audacity of the lie was breathtaking.

"Your client is a fugitive from justice, counselor," the judge stated dryly. "Unless he is prepared to surrender himself to this court right now, your motion is denied."

The lawyer smiled, a cold, reptilian expression.

"My client is fully prepared to surrender, Your Honor," the lawyer said, gesturing toward the doors. "He is waiting in the hallway right now."
